On my way back to California. Today was Day One. An 8 1/2 hour drive with several stops, making it 9 1/2 hours total. As you drive into the state, the large sign proclaims, “Welcome to Sweet Home Alabama”. We are safely tucked into our clean hotel room…on the third floor. They usually put people with dogs on the first floor, which is a lot easier for me. But, we are in a sparsely populated area with just a gas station across the street, so I do feel a little safer on the third floor. Being an older, single traveler, I am learning to be carefully aware, to double-lock my doors, and to be settled in by dark. Daytime is for travel and adventure. Nighttime is for safety and rest.
I left a new group of friends back in Wilmington. The Pub, next door to the Restaurant, is filled with more, shall we say, lively people. Dinner is served in there as well as in the restaurant. They also have a full bar, but half of the people who come in don’t drink. This is a favorite of Veterans and other interesting people. One couple I met there is now watching the plant I bought on my first day in my Wilmington apartment. She is from Brazil. He is retired Navy. Lots of stories there. I texted them, as requested, to let them know where I made it to today. She said her husband was drinking his Virgin Bloody Mary. I introduced him to that. It is his new favorite. I’m finally getting into a groove after less than a month there. Now I will be gone for almost a month again. Life is funny that way.
I noticed, again, how lush and deep green the trees lining the highway are in South Carolina. I also noticed that Georgia, once again, had multiple traffic jams caused by crashes.
Before we left, I took JoJo to his new Veterinarian well-dog visit, where he also got his nails clipped. He was a trooper on the road today. He is worth a road trip.
I’m pretty tired and a warm bath is calling my name so I will make this a short one. Tomorrow, I’ll be in Arkansas. That’s only a 7 1/2 hour drive.
