Today’s jots and notes are dedicated to Richard. Continue to get well, my friend.
Not everyone is as blessed as I am. I have two siblings. I love them both. I actually like them both. One of them lives on the opposite side of the country. One of them lives in another country across eight time zones. Each grew up to marry and have two children respectively. Each of my nephews (and niece) has grown into a normal and healthy human being. That says something for the parents, both my siblings and my in-laws.
Obviously, we don’t see each other very much. This world has gotten small enough that we can call or video chat, but I miss the family hugs, eye-to-eye coffee chats, and general closeness we grew up with. I was the eldest. By the time I learned how to do that job, they were already grown and following their own paths. Thank you, God, for not letting me screw it up too badly.
When any two of us actually come together, in the same room, it is like we were never apart. We don’t stare at each other and think, “Who are you?” We recognize each other’s individualities. Our life paths are of interest to each other. Now, you tell me, how blest am I?
When I left California, I left many friends, some of whom are truly special. All of them have been important to me. Since I have been in North Carolina, I have made many friends. They are my good friends, all of them. But, I have three friends from high school, 55 years ago, who are, and always have been, my friends. Like my siblings, they have all chosen different paths and become more of themselves in adult fashion. By that, I mean that each of them is an authentic version of themselves. They are people I like and admire. When I chance to spend time with any of them, it is like we were never apart except to catch up on their busy lives. I was not the eldest but some of them might tell you I tried to be. Old habits, you know. Still, they counted me in. Now, you tell me, how blest am I?
Now we come to the fried chicken. Who doesn’t like fried chicken? Well, maybe vegetarians would say ‘NO’. In that case, who doesn’t like fried vegetables tempura?
This seems to be a good place to end today’s thoughts. If I put evil food thoughts in your brain, I apologize. Heh, Heh!
