Day two: Up with the sun. I decided on a route that is less travelled and has more interesting scenery. Hwy 101, once the darling of the state of California, has been relegated to a “back road” highway. I think it is prettier, less congested, and cleaner. Driving along, I was thinking how little trash there was on the sides of the road. For miles and miles I saw, maybe, three shopping trash bags. Sonoma County boasts all of its environmental causes, but someone is throwing out their trash as they drive. Of course, with that thought, I drove by the sign for the town of Soledad and thought, “There is a prison there, right?” Highway cleaning might be one of their prison jobs. But, gosh darnit, they do a mighty fine job. I’m impressed
I did stop at the one rest stop I hit, mainly because my car apparently decides it is time for a break and shows me a cup and saucer, and just because I may or may not have touched the line-with-bumps more than once. I parked under one of the few shade trees and got out. There was a large, road-travel-ready motorcycle parked next to me and a man just chillaxing on the seat. He looked like one of Rambo’s buddies, outfit, hair, and all. I got out and pulled JoJo out for a quick walk. When JoJo and I had both been refreshed we walked back to the car, next to Rambo’s cousin. He looked at JoJo and said, “Is that a Pom?” I said, “Yes, his name is JoJo.” He proceeded to explain that he had just spent time taking care of his sister’s Papillon. We talked a little. He told me he was headed down to the Southwest “just because”. I told him I was headed to the East Coast “just because”. Then I put JoJo back into traction. Before getting into my car I turned to motor-man and, at the same moment, we both said, “Be safe!” I’m so glad I didn’t judge someone by the way they were dressed.
Turning onto Hwy 46-W I went by rolling hills, beautiful oak trees, vineyards, farms, and no road trash. Lovely and relaxing. I hit Hwy 1 but kept going just a tad further to Moonstone Beach Drive heading north and just a tad more until my destination: Cambria Landing, Inn & Suites. I’ll tell you all about it next blog.
Until then, #ontheroadagain
