This is Day Four, only 52 more days to go.
Day One:
I am the person who wanders around and tells others, “Do Not Fall” Then I go and fall. A crooked sidewalk caused my whole body to fall forward. Well, all of me except for my left foot. The Lord was merciful when He kept part of my Achilles tendon attached to my heel. Being in a non-weight-bearing cast for eight-plus weeks is worth the future of being able to walk again…eventually.
That first day they put me on crutches. The young person was deluded when he asked this 69-year-old, slightly overconfident woman if she could use crutches. How could I know it was a young man’s sport? Sure, hop down the hallway on oversized chopsticks, no problem. I made it home. I fell again. At least it was a soft landing. My smart neighbor, Mike, was bringing over a walker he had in his garage. He helped me up and I graduated to the walker. At least I was balanced. But my lily-white (literally) hands soon developed blisters. What a weenie I had become and I didn’t see it coming all these years.
Day Two:
Yet another wonderful neighbor brought over a “knee scooter.” What a Godsend! You should see me zipping up and down the hall. Remember when you were young and you would have wheelchair races using grandpa’s chair? Bare floors make my life even easier.
Time it takes to get normal things done:
Crutches – 12 times longer (includes falls)
Walker – 6 times longer (includes blisters)
Scooter – 2-3 times longer (includes whee-glides)
Blessings List:
- A doting step-daughter
- Wonderful neighbors
- Loving church family
- No head injuries were sustained
- Amazon & Safeway delivery
- 4 books & 8 magazines I can now take the time to read.
JoJo is very excited. I seem to be staying home more so I can be with him. We don’t need to tell him otherwise.
You will read this on Day Five when I only have 51 more days to go.

The old saying “It takes a village”…here we are, ready willing and able to be of any assistance when you need us. I am a few steps away. We know you are determined and you will follow the rules and heal as soon as possible. Prayers are coming your way. Love you! Diane
I commend you for finding gratitude in such a horrific experience. You always find a way to inspire us! We are blessed to live in a place where we all look out and care about each other. I am relieved you didn’t have to get surgery. Your strong faith is the real blessing. Thank you for showing us how to cope if it happens to us!
Robin, I am so sorry to read about your accident, and so wish I could offer some help, but I am
pretty much home bound too. Sending you love and healing thoughts and prayers.
